NEW DELHI — The World Economic Forum released a report on Friday that lifted India’s growth outlook, citing resilient household incomes and a stable policy environment. The report, based on surveys of economists, projects a higher growth rate for the 2026‑27 fiscal year than earlier forecasts. The findings come as the country’s labour market shows a rebound, with employment growth projected at 5.4 % in the second half of FY27, driven by e‑commerce and technology sectors. Meanwhile, the monsoon season has begun to recover, although uneven rainfall and a strengthening El Niño climate pattern keep the outlook for agricultural output cautious.
WEF Report Boosts Growth Confidence
The World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report, released on 25 September, surveyed 1,200 economists worldwide. Respondents noted that India’s household incomes have remained resilient despite inflationary pressures, and that the government’s policy framework—particularly fiscal consolidation and regulatory reforms—has maintained a stable macro‑environment. The report projects India’s GDP growth for FY27 at 6.5 %, up from the 6.2 % forecast released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation earlier this year. The Forum highlighted that the country’s investment climate has improved, with a 4 % rise in foreign direct investment inflows during the first quarter of FY27.
In the same report, economists expressed confidence that the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy stance will remain accommodative, citing the central bank’s recent decision to keep the repo rate at 4.25 % and its commitment to maintaining a flexible inflation targeting framework. The Forum also noted that India’s demographic dividend, with a working‑age population of 600 million, continues to support long‑term growth prospects.
Employment Growth Gains Momentum
Employment data released by the Ministry of Labour and Employment for the first half of FY27 show a 4.8 % rise in the workforce, with the second half projected to see a 5.4 % increase. The growth is led by the e‑commerce and technology sectors, which together added 1.2 million jobs in the first half of the year. The Ministry’s employment survey indicates that the informal sector’s participation rate has improved by 1.5 percentage points, reflecting a gradual shift towards formal employment arrangements.
Industry analysts point to the expansion of digital platforms and the rise of gig‑economy services as key drivers of the employment uptick. The Ministry’s data also show a 3.2 % increase in manufacturing employment, driven by the government’s Make in India initiative and the recent rollout of the National Manufacturing Policy. The employment outlook for the second half of FY27 is expected to benefit from the continued rollout of the Digital India program, which aims to create 10 million new jobs in the digital services sector by 2028.
