HYDERABAD — The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief in Telangana defended the State Information Register (SIR) process on Tuesday, asserting that there is no conflict within the party’s electoral cell regarding the revision of voter lists in West Bengal.
The statement comes amid heightened political scrutiny over the deletion of millions of names from the electoral rolls in West Bengal, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups. The Telangana BJP chief, speaking to reporters in Hyderabad, maintained that the party’s electoral machinery is functioning with full transparency and adherence to statutory guidelines.
He emphasized that the SIR exercise is a technical process mandated by the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961. According to him, the primary objective of the register is to ensure that only genuine residents are included in the voter list, thereby safeguarding the integrity of the democratic process.
The party chief rejected allegations of internal discord within the electoral cell, stating that all members are aligned on the issue of electoral integrity. He noted that the party has been working closely with the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure that the SIR process is conducted in a fair and impartial manner.
In a related development, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also defended the ECI’s actions, attributing the deletion of 27 lakh names to the removal of duplicate and fictitious entries. He accused the previous government of manipulating the voter list to secure electoral gains, a claim that has been disputed by the ruling party in the state.
The SIR process, which involves the revision of the electoral roll, is a periodic exercise conducted by the ECI to update the voter list. The process includes the verification of voter details, the removal of duplicates, and the addition of new eligible voters. The ECI has stated that the SIR is essential for maintaining the accuracy and reliability of the electoral roll.
However, the deletion of a significant number of names has raised concerns among opposition parties, who argue that the process may have led to the exclusion of genuine voters. They have called for a detailed audit of the SIR process to ensure that no legitimate voters have been disenfranchised.
The Telangana BJP chief, in his remarks, did not address these concerns directly but reiterated the party’s commitment to electoral integrity. He stated that the party is confident in the ECI’s ability to conduct the SIR process in a fair and transparent manner.
